World Of Warcraft: Burning Crusade:

  • Most of what is new does apply to high level characters. 58+
  • New continent
  • Raise level limit to 70
  • Flying mounts
  • 2 new Races – Blood Elves and Drenai
  • New proffession – Jewel crafting

Eragon – XBox 360

  • This isn’t a very good game. It’s fair to say that I didn’t like the movie very much either; althoughh the game was much worse.
  • It tries to be the LOTR game but fails horribly.
  • The cutscenes aren’t from the movie but uses the in game models

Reviews

Magical Starsign – DS –

  • Overly Cute RPG
  • Group of magic students out to save their teacher
  • Each stundet has elemental power
  • Standard RPG – with few choices
  • Very linear stroy – only one place to go next
  • Puzzle are mainly choosing the correct element for the obstacle
  • Graphics are colorful – each planet you visit having an elemental theme
  • Audio is SNES quality
  • Video clips are present
  • Good time killer but not for seasoned gamers

Big Brain Academy – DS

  • Not really a game, technically speaking
  • A bunch of mini puzzles that rate the mass of your brain and then offers some funny quips about you.
  • You can either practice the mini games at different difficulty levels in 1 of the 5 different categories or you can choose to take an overall evaluation.

Madden 2007 – Wii

  • Full featured version of the game.
  • Graphics look good although they could be nicer…
  • Sound is great… it’s Madden.
  • The control is where it’s at… everything is done in the Wii way.
  • It’s difficult to get learn but it’s fun and there are tutorials throughout.
  • The initial tutorial is incredibly well done and you get points.
  • The mini games are really fun and again the help you practice.
  • Best in game moment… I was defending, the ball was thrown at the receiver, I panicked and waved my arms my player swated the ball out of the air!

Hitman Blood Money – PS2 –

  • 3rd person action / stealth game
  • Play as a contract killer taking out assignments
  • each levelis open in how you go about your assignment
  • graphically as good as any in the genre
  • I still perfer Splinter Cell (mainly because online)

Episode 46

Posted by abootgames on January 8, 2007

Happy New Year. All the best to all our listeners / viewers for the coming year.

I am starting this year out by putting the show up on time, and I hope to keep this going from now on.

This week is a little light but next week will be a fully packed episode as we draw closer to Aboot Games’ 1st birthday.

Direct Download link!

ReviewsPreview* – Rogue Galaxy –

  • RPG –
  • Cell shaded graphic giving the familliar cartoony feel
  • Real time battles with unique controls
  • Teammembers “Special” moves have to be activate.
  • I saw one button press move similar to the legend of dragoon
  • Demo had limited game play
  • One boss battle – very epic – did require a lot of items and things

Gears of War: Collector’s Edition

  • This is truly the best war based game I have ever played.
  • The collector’s edition includes the game, a behind the scens disk (which isn’t spectacular), a free XBlive accout for 48 days (this may come with the regular game), a cool hardcover book with images and text about the game, and a really nice, but big, tin box.
  • All told the game is what makes this package shine!
  • Thr graphis are immersive and dark. They’re so good you don’t notice them outside of cutscenes, you’re to immersed.
  • The sound is super spooky. Same as above, you don’t hear VO or music. It all just blends into the experience.
  • The game play is what it should be. This is a war game.
  • Your heart beats, you’re looking around scared, you’re cowering behind objects, and then you’re running and gunning to protect your team.
  • I’m playing it through in co-op mode because that’s my favourite type of gameplay. This game delivers!
  • The AI is smart enough to take advantage of you if you aren’t smart. Jumping out into the open is not a good idea!
  • You truly get the feling that 4 men against an army is NOT a good idea!
  • The only drawback I’ve found is that the game doesn’t handle mulitple save games so if you want to go back and show this game to another friend you’ll save at that spot.
  • Buy this game!

Tony Hawk: Project 8 – XB360

  • Best Tony Hawk Game since the original. Slightly better than THUG.

Reviews

Snoopy vs. The Red Baron – PS2

  • This is great game.
  • Imagine the combat from Rogue squaron or Crimson skies, but in a fun Peanuts world.
  • Graphics are clean and very peanutty.
  • Art is a combo of cell shaded 3D stuff and actual 2D peanuts stuff
  • The music is ok, but the VO is a bit lame. The actors are obviously not the same as from the cartoon show and it feels different.
  • The gameplay is solid with a good mix of combat and flying.
  • Missions are well varied from kill this to defend that!
  • Buy this game. You WILL have fun.

Oddworld, Stranger’s wrath –

  • 3rd person action game with FPS elements.
  • In the same universe as previous Oddworlds games
  • plays like many other action games.
  • Bounty enemies for cash to upgrade and catch bigger/ badder emenies.

Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition – PS2

  • To start I have never played on of these before. I’ve seen the first one played, but never done it myself.
  • This game as everybody knows is all about cool. This game covers cool, like a fat guy on a bicycle seat.
  • Graphics are very nice for the PS2. FMVs are pretty and full of humour.
  • The sound is well done, but the hard rock soundtrack is kind of annoying during the load screen… especially after you’ve died 3 or 4 times on a mission and it starts from the same spot.
  • Gameplay is the same old DMC fair: You fight hordes of spooky baddies using swords and guns in a multitude of high flying combos.
  • If you like 3rd person action (Final Fight updated) this is a great game. If you’re looking for a deeper story or something a bit more tactical this ain’t for you.

Retro Gaming Moment

Scorched Earth

  • 2d turn based straegy game

Nintendojo – wii strap stress test.
Reviews

NHL 2K7 – 360

  • Pretty game in HD
  • Smooth fluid passing shooting system
  • Not one of the broken games that is way to easy to score on
  • Sounds are pretty good
  • Tonnes of extra features from advanced controls to party games

Nacho Libre (DS) –

  • Fun little game that follows the story of the movie
  • Has several short clips from the movie
  • Lots of mini games (range from easy to insane)
  • A good wrestling game
  • little too easy though

Just Cause – 360

  • Cool take on a free roaming (sandbox) game
  • Other than the the arcady parachute and action modes on cars not alot of inovation
  • I have to say despite the beauty graphics, nifty sound, and badass weapons it just isn’t exciting enough to hold my attention.
  • Vehicles don’t handle very well
  • World is pretty but not very interesting.
  • If you’re looking for this type of game on the 360 go ahead. If not avoid it.

Retro Gaming Moment

Golden Axe – Wii

  • Plays really well on the Wii Remote (no extra controller required)
  • True to it’s origins, you can play easy or regular difficulty.
  • No extra bells and whistles, grab a buddy and play this game!
  • 800 Wii points (kinda pricy)

Download of the week

Maple Story – PC

  • Cutsy, Free, 2D MMO
  • Not bad, kills some time

Small Arms – 360 (XLA)

  • Awesome 2D fighter in the ilk of Smash brothers
  • a wack load of unlockable characters
  • Cool levels and training
  • Nifty weapons with interesting alternate fire modes.

  • Some collection needed
  • Aside scene’s like those in the show are a further mini game.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess – Wii

Reviews

Hunter the Reckoning – XB

  • Decent dungeon crawler with a horror twist.
  • RPG elements aren’t as big as other games in this genre, but it makes up for it in hecticness.
  • Unlike other games in this ilk you are forced to play as a team. Gameplay is to hectic to play alone.
  • The control style is very similar to smash tv except that the fire button isn’t linked to the aim.
  • Level of difficulty can be crazy even with 4 players as I played it.
  • If you like this type of game and have 3 friends who love games that force you to work together buy this game. I got it used for $10.

Bounty Hounds – PSP

  • Hack and Slash game
  • Set in distant future battling alien robots
  • Button masher
  • Limit Camera control – Reset behiind only
  • Too many attacks from off screen
  • Great control scheme – ability to quick change Left / right / both weapons
  • visaully stunning / not too much goin on to be distracting
  • I would pass on this title but look forward to a sequel

Driver: Paralelle Lines – PS2

  • Good entry into the sandbox genre
  • Surprisingly fun game considering how crappy Driv3r was.
  • Cool 70s soundtrack
  • Cool 70s feel
  • Dated graphics
  • Feels like GTAIII with the detail of San Andreas
  • Great car editor.

Retro Gaming Moment

NHLPA 93 – Sega Genesis

  • NOT Licensed by the League, only Player Association
  • Real Players on Generic City Named teams
  • No frills hockey game only shooting and passing.
  • No penelties
  • Affectionately called “AWW C’MON” by me and my friends.

We have expanded the Aboot Games team. We would like to welcome Kamaal who will be taking over the video side of the aboot games production.Reviews

Reservoir Dogs (PS2) –

  • Great addition to the story – extra info not seen in the movie –
  • The “control” of the police is a nice touch
  • Having 2 paths – psychopath and professional gives a tiny bit of replayability
  • The visuals are dated and look old
  • The driving portions are terrible
  • The action portions aren’t that great – trys to add stealth elements but fails
  • The soundtrack is the awesome “K-Billy super sounds of the 70’s”
  • Voice actors seems like they are trying to be the original actor and not the character.
  • Cutscene’s are CG’d scenes from the movie, mostly edited both for time and content.
  • This would make a great extra disk in the 15th anniversary edition (which is advertised in the instruction book) but not much more.

Final Fantasy XII – PS2

  • Much better than I expected, based on what I saw in the preview from Dragon Quest VIII
  • Story is fantastic! Fully imersive, great cut scenes, everythign done right.
  • The sound is stellar as always, VO is top notch
  • Graphics look dated. It’s an old console now and it shows. I’d love to see a version of this for XB360 or the PS3… won’t happen.
  • Colour palette is muted and everything kind of blends together.
  • The combat is the thing… It’s good, very reminisent of a MMO, but I miss the old style of fighting.
  • The extra that come with the collector’s edition are nice, but not… OMG I can’t lve without nice.

Reviews

Dragon Quest VIII –

  • True to the original, turn based RPG
  • Cell shaded graphics give a cartoon feel.
  • New menu option – Intimidate – scare off enemies, or cause instant attack
  • Grand epic story line
  • Voice over in cut scene’s is way over the top.
  • No voice outside of cut scene’s
  • Awesome Orchestral score

Echanted Arms – 360

  • Mixed feelings on this one.
  • Horrible story: Imagine the worst Japaneese RPG then multiply by a your shoe size bad story
    • One of the main chars is way over the top gay. Not sure if this was supposed to be a pro gay statement, which would have been way cool and refreshing but instead it comes out as gay bashing.
    • Most NPCs have names that relfect their current mood, like “Girl who loves her brother”. It’s like it was written for 7 year old Japaneese girls or something
  • The game is beautiful although not groundbreaking in any regard.
  • The sound is good, very nice, not groundbreaking.
  • The combat system however is where it’s at. It’s a tactical kinda turn based thingy. At first it’s a bit weird, but once you get used to it it’s really cool.
  • Theleveling system is different enough to be interesting.
  • Final word: Hated it at first, gonna keep playing it now. Starting to get good. Buy it cheap and expect it to suck for the first hour or so. It’s worth it.

Wipeout: Pure –

  • Super fast sled racing
  • Several different Levels (increasing in difficulty)
  • Great visual sense of speed
  • The voice over is lost in the background music and sound effect
  • Content downloads add a huge amount of tracks and sleds

N3 – 360

  • Prettiest game I’ve seen so far on the 360!
  • Fun hack and slash in the ilk of Dynasty warriors.
  • Do Not be fooled, Kingdom under Fire this aint.
  • Crazy amounts of enemies on screen.
  • Final word: Technical masterpiece // the game is pretty much same old same old.

Online Retro Moment.
