Field General – PSP

  • Turn based strategy
  • Basic games play – move/shoot/deploy
  • pretty bland graphics
  • addictive gameplay
  • “just one more turn” appeal

Marvel Ultimate Alliance – XB360

  • This game is the beautiful cousin of the recent co-op X-Men games, X-Men Legends.
  • It tweaks the formula again and delivers a smoother, prettier version of the X-Men Legends (mind you it was on the 360).
  • The visuals are stunning on the 360, with cutscenes that really get you excited for the actual game. 1 complaint every level… even Namor’s underwater level is the same dreary palate.
  • The sounds is ok, not stellar, not bad. VO can be a bit cheesy, but hey we like it that way right?!?
  • The fact is though, that the X-Men Legends games, in my opinion, were poorly excuted imitations of other games in this genre like Champions of Norrath and it’s sequel, or DnD? Heroes.
  • All three of these offer the ability to play co-op with up to 3 friends (4 in total), this one let’s you do it over live.
  • You can play alone if you want to although you still have to have 4 chars in your party; which you can switch between in realtinme.
  • As you play you gain XP and can spend this XP on various character special attacks and such; many of which can be combo’d with another player for super special moves that do extra damage.
  • The problem though is that although there are something like 20 different characters it never feels like it matters. They all play to much like each other for you to care.
  • Sure Spidey can swing across the top of the screen and Storm can fly about and Cap can throw his shield, but in the end the balancing and the environments are such that everybody just ends up waling on everytbody else with no thought to team play. At least with my friends it wasn’t needed!
  • The bottom line is that these games are best when teamwork is key and this game doesn’t require it.
  • It’s a rent for die hard Marvel fans, a pass for everybody else.

Burnout -Dominator – PSP

  • An excellent addition to the Burnout series
  • Oddly missing is Crash mode
  • an amazing sense of speed
  • Encourages dangerous driving

Tiger Woods Golf 2007 – Wii

  • A sadly disapointing rendition of the golf favourite.
  • The graphics on this offering are worse than the 2005 version on the PS2!
  • The jaggies are everywhere, and in Gameface you can make a character with pointy cheeks!
  • During chipping and putting there is a crazy about of screen flicker as you try to aim your shot.
  • The sound is fine, but the VO offerings of the commentator’s again when compared to their PS2 05 cousin is sorly lacking. Gone are most of the wisecracks and interesting little sayings.
  • Ok, so nobody cares about any of that right? How does it control…well….
  • The menus use EAs familiar Wii control scheme, if the Wii-mote is pointed at the screen you use it like a mouse to select items from the menu, gameface, etc… if you point the Wii-mote away from the TV the D-pad and A button control the menus. Both of these systems are clunky at best. Game face is especially frustrating, because the select button and the rotate character button are right next to each other. GRRRR!!!!!
  • The actual golf is pretty good… once you get the hang of it. It’s about the same as Wii Sports Golf… of course I got that for free! In their defense once you get the hang of it it is easy and fun.
  • If you like golf games and have some friends it’s a buy; although if you can wait I’d be willing to bet that 2008 will be better.

Bullet Witch – XB360

  • This is another of those games that I could only sit through for an hour. It’s that bad!
  • It’s good looking third person shooter with “magic”
  • You play as the Bullet Witch (there is a name it doesn’t matter… really it doesn’t). A girl roaming post apocalyptic America in your hunt to kill demons from below. Pretty standard fair.
  • The opening cutscene for this movie will make you want cringe as it plays much more like a commercial for the game than an actual intro to the “story”.
  • Gameplay is the standard 2 analog stick moving and aiming setup with your shooting and dodging attached to the triggers
  • the shoulder “buttons” and the face buttons are used for your awesome witch powers which are not quite awesom and not quite witch like…
  • The control feels sluggish, there is no target snap and dodgin involes thes over the top spread eagled jumps that make Lara Croft’s flips look like falling down drunk.
  • The powers that I saw included a wall that is great to stop bullets, both the enemies and yours… and it disappears pretty quickly. a force push that doesn’t effect the enemies (or at least I couldn’t get it too) and this big lightning effect that you have to aim a t a big tank to continue a certian part. Oops the Tank shot and killed me while I was setting all that up! Oh yeah you can heal civilions too. Ooooh whoose the badass witch now?!?
  • The graphics are pretty, but the animations are clunky just like the controls.
  • The audio again is okay. It’s nothing to write home about.
  • This is an ignore.

Valkyrie Profile 2:Silmeria

  • builds on a great game
  • Amazing 3d look in essentially 3d game
  • Battles are cross of Tactile / real time
  • Engrossing Story.

Red Steel – Wii

  • The first FPS on thw Wii.
  • Not a great game, but hardly a stinker
  • The control is really difficult to get used to, but once you do it is servicable
  • The graphics are stylized, but still not great. They try to go to realistic.
  • Again sound is okay but not great.
  • This is a rent for it’s novelty… not for any other reson.

Reviews –

GT Pro Series – Wii

  • Surprisingly good racing game
  • The Wii-mote is held with the D-Pad facing you and you use it like a steering whell. In fact if you buy this game it comes with a plastic steering wheel you can snap your Wii-mote into. Either way it controls the same
  • The game is cell shaded so the look is take it or leave it.
  • The sound is decen’t but not fantastic, the remote doesn’t do much.
  • Gameplay very similar to a Gran Turismo or the like. You race the NPCs to unlock new tracks and upgrades.
  • The real story here is the controls which is fantastic. I completly expected it to suck and I was greatly surprised that from the get go it controlled like a car.
  • Don’t be confused, this game does not control like Excite Truck; which is loose and spongy in my opinion. This game controls like a car, you can power slide recover, and the whole bit.
  • Multiplayer includes 2-4 player split screen.
  • If your looking for a racing game on the Wii I suggest this title.

Flyff – Fly For Fun – Free mmo – Website here!

  • cartoony anime style – if kindom hearts was an MMO this would be it.
  • tutorial drag out way too long
  • I have played better MMO’s but this is worth the download.
  • Well worth the cost.

Episode 51!

Posted by abootgames on February 27, 2007

Here is this weeks episode.

Reviews

Worms – Open Warfare (DS)

  • A faithful port of the hugely popular PC game.
  • Good use of the touch screen to select weapons
  • Unfortunatly the DS doesn’t seem to have enough processing power to run it!
  • The AI has a hard time and more than once an opponent did absolutly nothing on their turn.
  • Mor often it’ll take an oponent 30 seconds to take a few steps and then another 15 seconds to decide to shoot.
  • When they finally do shoot however they are pretty acurate.
  • During processing the top screen tends to flicker
  • This game eats batteries too, I guess it’s all the extra processing.
  • If you can live with a bit of screen flicker and more frequent recharging the heart of the Worms game is here and with 4 player wifi play you could have a great deal of fun… but not likely
  • Stick to the PC version

Dot Hack GU Rebirth
Wii Play

  • Another collection of mini gmaes
  • Arguabley these games are more mini than those on Wii Sports, but there are 9 of them instead of 5 and the game comes with an extra Wii Reomte for the price of a regular game.
  • The games have the same addictive look and feel as Wii sports and include
    • a duck hunt kinda game
    • pool
    • a wheres waldo kinda thing
    • air hockey
    • ping pong
    • cow racing
    • tank combat
    • fishng
    • symbol matching game.
  • All the games are fun in 1 or 2 player mode… sorry there is no 4 player action here.
  • They challenge you to use the Wii-mote in different ways and really help you improve your Wii-ing skills.
  • Of notable mention are billiards that use the sensors proximity detector to have you simulate a pool stroke and ping pong which is pong on crack and by far the best of these mini games.
  • If you would pay money for Wi Sports buy it. If not you may want to rent it. One way or the other you must play the ping pong to let the evolution of the video game come full circle.

Dynasty Warrior vol. 2 –

  • similar to console version
  • wave after wave of enemy – button masher style
  • often getting hit or battling thing off the screen
  • different playable characters – but all play basically the same
  • Choose lieutenants / equipment before each battle
  • meet the victory conditions and move on / dont and fail

Full Auto – XB360

  • This a beautiful drivin’ n’ shootin’ game.
  • The control is pretty tight
  • The tutorial takes you one step at a time
  • Lots of different cars and weapons combos to satisfy your appetite.
  • The sound is top quite good although the game is busy enough not to notice.
  • The graphics are gorgeous. This is the game that defined the graphics potential of the 360.

Retro –

Ur Quan (Star Control 2) 1992 – DOS game

Reviews

Magical Starsign – DS –

  • Overly Cute RPG
  • Group of magic students out to save their teacher
  • Each stundet has elemental power
  • Standard RPG – with few choices
  • Very linear stroy – only one place to go next
  • Puzzle are mainly choosing the correct element for the obstacle
  • Graphics are colorful – each planet you visit having an elemental theme
  • Audio is SNES quality
  • Video clips are present
  • Good time killer but not for seasoned gamers

Big Brain Academy – DS

  • Not really a game, technically speaking
  • A bunch of mini puzzles that rate the mass of your brain and then offers some funny quips about you.
  • You can either practice the mini games at different difficulty levels in 1 of the 5 different categories or you can choose to take an overall evaluation.

Madden 2007 – Wii

  • Full featured version of the game.
  • Graphics look good although they could be nicer…
  • Sound is great… it’s Madden.
  • The control is where it’s at… everything is done in the Wii way.
  • It’s difficult to get learn but it’s fun and there are tutorials throughout.
  • The initial tutorial is incredibly well done and you get points.
  • The mini games are really fun and again the help you practice.
  • Best in game moment… I was defending, the ball was thrown at the receiver, I panicked and waved my arms my player swated the ball out of the air!

Hitman Blood Money – PS2 –

  • 3rd person action / stealth game
  • Play as a contract killer taking out assignments
  • each levelis open in how you go about your assignment
  • graphically as good as any in the genre
  • I still perfer Splinter Cell (mainly because online)
